6. Reading Assignments. Prepare students for reading assignments through providing background on the topic, pre-teaching unfamiliar vocabulary and setting purposes for reading. The best way for students to set purposes for reading in a textbook chapter is to read the first paragraph, the first sentence of each paragraph, the last paragraph and raise questions that they will read to answer. After reading, students apply what they have learned.
